Jump into science for policy at #EGU25!
Issue 50, April 2025

Dear EGU Expert,

This month’s Science for Policy Newsletter provides you with science for policy sessions and activities that you can dive into during #EGU25! Not only is EGU25 offering a range of science for policy sessions, but we’re also hosting initiatives that will enable you to discuss your questions with the experts and practice your policy pitch!

In addition to the EGU25 science for policy activities, this month’s newsletter highlights the most recent GeoPolicy blog post, the Green Deal Barometer’s annual survey, and a new report by the Scientific Advice Mechanism of the European Commission.

If you have any further questions or comments about the EGU25's science for policy programme or policy opportunities that exist for scientists in Europe, don’t hesitate to get in touch via policy@egu.eu.

Best wishes,

Chloe Hill and Damla Posta, EGU’s Science for Policy Team

YOUR GUIDE TO ENGAGING WITH SCIENCE FOR POLICY AT EGU25

Each year, the EGU’s Science for Policy Programme at the EGU General Assembly provides participants with insights on how their research and expertise can be integrated into the policymaking process and the opportunities that exist for them to engage.

This month’s GeoPolicy blog post highlights some of the EGU25’s most exciting #Sci4Pol sessions and initiatives that you can engage with during the week! Even if you’re just a bit curious about science for policy, it’s worth adding some of these sessions to your personal programme!

ASK A SCIENCE FOR POLICY PRACTITIONER

This year, EGU will be offering researchers the opportunity to have their questions answered by policymakers and those working on the science-policy interface through small group meetings throughout the General Assembly (28 April – 2 May 2025)!

Meetings will be available both on-site and virtually at the General Assembly in Vienna. To meet one of the science for policy practitioners, please submit your question(s) or topic that you would like to talk about by 15 April 2025 and you will be paired with a practitioner who can discuss them.

PITCH YOUR RESEARCH TO A POLICYMAKER AT EGU25!

If you’re attending EGU25 in person and would like to practice pitching your research to policymakers, you can submit your research topic or project here and join us from 10:45 - 12:30 on Tuesday 29 April to give your pitch to a panel of four science for policy experts! These experts will listen to your pitch, give you feedback, and provide insights on areas that you can improve when discussing your research with policymakers in the future.

Submit your research now as timeslots will be allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis!

PROVIDE FEEDBACK ON THE EUROPEAN GREEN DEAL’S IMPLEMENTATION

To increase awareness and political accountability for the Green Deal's implementation, the IEEP hosts the European Green Deal Barometer, an annual survey that aims to assess the status of the Green Deal. This year’s edition has a special focus on the Green Deal’s external dimension, with questions on EU and international climate commitments as well as on impacts on countries outside of the EU. It also contains questions on the spillovers on some policy files, such as the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, the Critical Raw Materials Act, and the upcoming Clean Industrial Deal.

If you’re working on any of these or related areas and would like to provide your insights, you can answer the 10-15 minute survey here until 16 April.

UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACTS OF THE SCIENTIFIC ADVICE MECHANISM

The Scientific Advice Mechanism of the European Commission provides independent scientific advice to European institutions at the request of the College of Commissioners. It has recently published a report examining its impact on EU policymaking at both the EU and national levels.

The report, Outputs and impacts 2019-2024, presents how advice by the Scientific Advice Mechanism has shaped EU policies in the past five years. Moreover, it covers eleven case studies in five different EU priority areas, highlighting the recommendations that it provided on each topic, from food systems to solar radiation modification and the energy transition.
