Science for Policy opportunities that you can apply for to support the EGU’s Policy Programme and evidence-informed policymaking in Europe!
Issue 49, March 2025

Dear EGU Expert,

This month’s Newsletter highlights several opportunities that you can apply for to support the EGU’s Policy Programme and evidence-informed policymaking in Europe!

There is currently an open call for volunteer Policy Officers for three EGU Divisions as well as for Task Force members for the new EGU Climate Hazard and Risk Task Force! EGU is also seeking to hire a Science for Policy Officer on a fixed-term basis to cover a maternity leave. In addition to this, we also highlight the EGU’s policy-relevant publications and an opportunity to have your policy questions answered at EGU25!

If you have any further questions or comments about the policy opportunities that exist for scientists in Europe, don’t hesitate to get in touch via policy@egu.eu.

Best wishes,

Chloe Hill and Damla Posta, EGU’s Science for Policy Team

OPEN CALL FOR EGU DIVISION POLICY OFFICERS

There are three EGU Divisions that currently have an open call for a Division Policy Officer. These volunteers will support their Division and scientific community by sharing relevant resources and opportunities through, for example, EGU General Assembly sessions, social media, webinars, and campfires, and are welcome to propose additional activities. They will also work with the EGU’s Policy Programme to identify the policy needs of European policymakers.

Divisions that are currently seeking new Division Policy Officers include:

To apply, please submit your CV (max 2 pages) and cover letter (max 1-page) that outlines your motivation and relevant experience or interest in policy to the email addresses that are related to each EGU Division (listed above) by 31 March 2025.

JOIN THE EGU’S NEW CLIMATE HAZARD AND RISK TASK FORCE!

Starting in April 2025, the EGU’s Climate Hazard and Risk Task Force will support the transfer of climate hazard and risk-related knowledge to policymakers and promote evidence-informed policymaking.

The 8-10 selected experts will not only provide timely, relevant, and useful scientific advice to European policymakers but also gain experience working at the science-policy interface, expand their network, and develop deeper insights into the European policy landscape.
All members of the Task Force should be willing to commit at least 4 hours per month to meetings and other activities. You can read more about this opportunity here and apply here by midnight on 31 March 2025.

OPEN CALL: EGU SCIENCE FOR POLICY OFFICER (MATERNITY COVER)

The EGU is currently seeking a Science for Policy Officer (maternity cover) to support the EGU’s existing Policy Programme. The selected candidate will support evidence-informed policymaking by empowering EGU members to engage in the policymaking process, providing accurate, timely, and actionable scientific information to policymakers, and strengthening Europe’s science-policy ecosystem!

You can read more about this position and apply here by midnight on 19 March 2025.

EGU’S POLICY-RELEVANT PUBLICATIONS

The EGU’s science for policy team regularly updates the policy-relevant papers section of the EGU website to highlight publications from EGU’s scientific journals that may be useful for policymakers and support evidence-informed decision-making.

Those working on policy and societal relevant issues can use key words to search this page and find scientific evidence that is relevant to their work. If you have published in an EGU-related journal and believe it is relevant to policymakers, you can share that with EGU’s policy team via policy@egu.eu. You can also share this regularly updated list with your contacts working on policy and adjacent areas!

ASK A SCIENCE FOR POLICY PRACTITIONER AT EGU25

This year, EGU will be offering researchers the opportunity to have their questions answered by policymakers and those working on the science-policy interface through small group meetings throughout the General Assembly (28 April – 2 May 2025)!

Meetings will be available both on-site and virtually at the General Assembly in Vienna. To meet one of the science for policy practitioners, please submit your question(s) or topic that you would like to talk about by 10 April 2025 and you will be paired with a practitioner who can discuss them.
