New EGU #Science4Policy initiatives and more opportunities for researchers to engage with European policymaking!
Issue 48, February

Dear EGU Expert,

This month’s Newsletter launches new EGU science for policy initiatives and highlights more opportunities for researchers to engage with European policymaking!

This month, we dive into how you can apply to join the EGU Climate Hazard and Risk Task Force and how you can submit a nomination for the new EGU Science for Policy Award! We also dive into opportunities to pitch your research to policymakers at #EGU25 and an opportunity to learn more about the European Commission through its Blue Book Traineeship! Finally, key updates on the EU Green Deal are highlighted through a recently published report by the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission.

If you have any further questions or comments about the policy opportunities that exist for scientists in Europe, don’t hesitate to get in touch via policy@egu.eu.

Best wishes,

Chloe Hill and Damla Posta, EGU’s Science for Policy Team

JOIN THE EGU’S NEW CLIMATE HAZARD AND RISK TASK FORCE!

Starting in April 2025, the EGU’s Climate Hazard and Risk Task Force will support the transfer of climate hazard and risk-related knowledge to policymakers and promote evidence-informed policymaking.

The 8-10 selected experts will not only provide timely, relevant, and useful scientific advice to European policymakers but also gain experience working at the science-policy interface, expand their network, and develop deeper insights into the European policy landscape.

All members of the Task Force should be willing to commit at least 4 hours per month to meetings and other activities. You can read more about this opportunity and here and submit an application here by midnight on 31 March 2025.

NOMINATE NOW FOR EGU’S NEW SCIENCE FOR POLICY AWARD

This month, the EGU has launched a Science for Policy Award that recognises researchers, knowledge brokers, and policymakers who have strengthened the European science-policy interface, or significantly contributed to the integration of scientific evidence into the European policymaking processes.

This award will be open to both individuals and teams, and while the candidate’s science for policy achievements should be focused within Europe, the candidate(s) can be resident outside Europe, and/or non-European citizens. You can read more about this award here and the nomination procedure here. You can submit a Nomination for this award until 15 June 2025.

PITCH YOUR RESEARCH TO A POLICYMAKER

EGU25 will not only provide participants with a range of engaging science for policy-related sessions, but it will also offer a range of opportunities to meet and engage with policy experts!

If you’re attending EGU25 in person and would like to practice pitching your research to policymakers, you can submit your research topic or project here and join us from 10:45 - 12:30 on Tuesday 29 April to give your pitch to a panel of four science for policy experts! These experts will listen to your pitch, give you feedback, and provide insights on areas that you can improve when discussing your research with policymakers in the future. Submit your research now as timeslots will be allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis!

OPEN CALL: EUROPEAN COMMISSION BLUE BOOK TRAINEESHIPS

The European Commission currently has an open call for its 5-month Blue Book Traineeship. These traineeships not only provide a stepping stone for those looking to transition into a more policy-driven career but also give scientists who want to stay in research new insights into how evidence can be used to support decision-making processes!

While the exact activities undertaken by the trainee will vary depending on the policy area and service, some examples of activities that you may undertake during a Traineeship include: attending and organising meetings, conducting research, drafting and editing policy documents, and answering inquiries.

The Commission doesn’t specifically target scientists in the application process but often those with specific expertise are welcome. You can read more about the Traineeship and apply here before 10:00 CEST on 17 March 2025.

NEW REPORT: DELIVERING THE EU GREEN DEAL

The Joint Research Centre of the European Commission recently published a report on the progress towards the European Green Deal targets with the aim of understanding where the European Union stands in reaching these targets.

The report highlights the achievements of recent years and identifies priority areas where enhanced efforts in the coming years will be needed. Furthermore, the report provides science-informed guidance on future EU policies to eventually achieve a climate-neutral Europe by 2050.

You can read the full report here.
