[THE LOUPE] YOUR EGU GEOSCIENCE RESOURCE - FEBRUARY 2025 ======================================================== Seeing below the surface Using new technologies to understand our planet's subsurface properties Much of the way that we understand our Earth comes at a distance, seeing into places unviewable by the human eye. This month at EGU we have been learning more about these efforts, from tracking the growth and change of ice in the subsurface environment (https://egu.eu/47V5H0/) to discovering the role that geodesists have to play in our geoscientific landscape (https://egu.eu/0JEMXY/). We also learned about the value in our diverse scientific landscapes, whether that is how we are training the next generation of Arctic researchers (https://egu.eu/69ZBSX/), discovering the value of science diplomacy (https://egu.eu/915W46/) in science for policy work, tackling our need to dismantle the cis-het-white 'boys club' (https://egu.eu/7Y9YQB/), or building individual resilience (https://egu.eu/1Z8XIY/) through personal growth, we know that the strength in our community comes from the range of people who are part of it. We also took time this month to thank all our amazing volunteers (https://egu.eu/6JH1BY/)\- over 11,900 of you - from both the Union as a whole and from the Publications (https://egu.eu/8VCUG8/). Your work and enthusiasm keeps the Union moving forward, thank you! We are also currently holding an extraordinary election for the Biogeosciences (BG) Division President (https://egu.eu/6VKE2K/), so cast your vote by 24 March. The EGU Photo Competition is now again open for submissions (https://egu.eu/9VTNXM/); enter by 31 March and you could win free registration to EGU26, and the admiration of your peers! The EGU25 (https://www.egu25.eu/) letters of schedule and the meeting programme will also be launched this month, so have you signed up to be an EGU25 mentor (https://egu.eu/20C1XL/)? Applications close 17 March. DEADLINES --------- 25 MARCH Apply for ECS Education Fellowship (https://egu.eu/2V0M2D/) 31 MARCH EGU25 Photo Competition deadline (https://egu.eu/9VTNXM/) SCIENCE FOR POLICY ------------------ Join the EGU’s new Climate Hazard and Risk Task Force Make a difference in European policymaking by joining EGU’s new Climate Hazard and Risk Task Force (https://egu.eu/733A5S/), which, starting in April 2025, will support the transfer of climate hazard and risk-related knowledge to policymakers and promote evidence-informed policymaking. The 8-10 selected experts will gain experience working at the science-policy interface in the European policy landscape. Submit an application (https://egu.eu/8ZP7MH/) by midnight on 31 March 2025. Nominate a colleague for EGU’s new Science for Policy Award! The EGU has launched a Science for Policy Award (https://www.egu.eu/awards-medals/science-for-policy-award/) for researchers, knowledge brokers, and policymakers who have strengthened the European science-policy interface. While the candidate’s achievements (https://egu.eu/9DXTPL/) should be focused within Europe (https://www.coe.int/en/web/about-us/our-member-states), they can be resident outside Europe, and/or non-European citizens. Submit a nomination (https://www.egu.eu/awards-medals/nominations/) for this award by 15 June 2025. JOURNAL WATCH ------------- "Our findings indicate that [Sardinia and Corsica's] ancient continental structure remains mostly unchanged. Alpine orogenesis about 50 million years ago influenced Corsica's crust, enriching it with water-bearing minerals."
