Finding a balance Tropical carbon monoxide emissions and future plastic in agriculture. This July on the EGU blogs we have explored the new ways we are discovering how potentially harmful emissions and materials interact with our environments; from a new study that finds that tropical rainforests may actually produce carbon monoxide in certain conditions, to learning about how biodegradeable plastic could make big changes in agriculture, as researcher Kara Müller says "Plastics are commonly used [in agricultural practices] but it’s impossible to retrieve the plastic entirely and it will end up in the environment. To counter this we need to analyse whether the plastic product is biodegradable in the soil under environmentally relevant conditions." If you are looking to broaden the reach of your recent Open Access EGU publications, EGU's Editorial Manager Eduardo Queiroz Alves has some advice for producing a video abstract, an excellent way to condense your findings for a new audience. Get his top tips on the EGUblogs. This month we chatted with EGU's new Vice-President, Marian Holness learning about her background in the GMPV Division, and her work with the Medal and Awards Committee. And the public call for sessions for EGU25 is now open, so head over to the EGU25 website to read the Convener Guidelines and submit your session by 9 September 2024.

SCIENCE FOR POLICY
|
Share your #science4policy initiative! The Skills4EOSC Consortium’s Science for Policy task group is gathering information about current and recently completed initiatives at the intersection of science and policy through a questionnaire. If you have a science for policy initiative, you can complete this questionnaire and potentially have it shared via the Skills4EOSC Consortium’s resources. Please fill in the questionnaire here by 31 August 2024.

European Environment Agency: Call for experts The European Environment Agency (EEA) is establishing a list of individual experts to support their activities with a focus on the areas of resource use, circular economy and waste, health and environment, oceans and sustainable blue economy, biodiversity, climate, and sustainability transitions. Experts in these areas can submit their details to apply to join this list and may then be invited to contribute to specific tasks and activities. All work completed by EEA listed experts will be remunerated. Learn more and apply to join the EEA list of experts here.

"Using observational and reanalysis data and the water budget equation for the land–atmosphere reservoir, we found trends in water storage within the studied basins' land–atmosphere reservoirs, exhibiting a marked latitudinal contrast: while low-latitude basins are becoming wetter, high-latitude basins are becoming drier. These patterns result from long-term imbalances in which low-latitude basins have received more water through the atmosphere than they have released through river discharge.
