EGU24 – what a week for science!

A record-breaking number of researchers collected together both in Vienna and online to connect over science.

The week of the General Assembly, EGU24, is over and phew what a week it was! As our biggest General Assembly we really want to get your feedback on your experiences. With 18,895 presentations happening it can be easy to feel like you missed out, but EGU24 doesn’t just end on Friday commenting on Supplementary Materials is open until 31 May, and registered attendees can watch the recorded Union-wide sessions and Medal & Award Lectures until the same date, when they then become public and Open Access.

EGU was hard at work covering a wide range of topics for the meeting, from innovative modelling techniques revealing volcanic activity under Tenerife, to soil bacteria that hunts like a wolfpack, to how butter tubs introduced into the environment from a serious flood help researchers learn about plastic pollution and so much more, over on the EGUblogs. You can even watch the Press Conferences on a range of topics from new discoveries about the Thwaites glacier in Antarctica to a new understanding of Jupiter’s history, predictions for our changing climate in the near future and learning about our ancestors from pollen, calcium deposits and erratics.

Lastly the EGU awards and medals are open for nominations until 15 June 2024. They cover a range of topics at different career stages, and recognise scientists for their outstanding research contribution the geosciences. You can also nominate your colleagues for recognition in science communication and outreach, science journalism, service to EGU and efforts to improve equality, diversity and inclusion in geoscience. Nomination is a simple process, so submit your colleagues for recognition, today!

Science for Policy

Diving into SciPol activities after EGU24

If you were inspired by EGU24’s Science for Policy sessions and initiatives, now is a great time to start getting more involved and continue the discussions!

You can consider joining the EGU Division Policy Officer and Point of Policy Contact Slack Group if you’d like to keep updated on science for policy activities and connect with others. You’re also welcome to join the EGU Science for Policy Hangouts on the first Monday of each month at 14:00 CEST.

Have your say on Horizon Europe

You can also have your say on the upcoming EU Horizon Funding Framework via the European Commission’s open call for input on the development of work programme. Researchers and other stakeholders are invited to submit their responses through surveys that cover different clusters, research infrastructures, European innovation ecosystems, the 5 EU Missions, and the New European Bauhaus facility. The input and feedback collected will then be used by the Commission to guide the next funding framework programme.

Journal Watch

Each month we choose a scientific paper published in one of EGU’s open access journals to be our Journal Watch, but did you know you can also access preprints, abstracts and supplementary materials from our meetings and annual General Assembly through EGUsphere?
