1. his exceptional contributions to geophysical research encompassing the entire field of dynamic meteorology with respect to observation, modelling and theory;

2. his very successful international organizational achievements, e.g., as the first Director of the ECMWF, as Secretary-General of WMO or as initiator of WCP;

3. his notable contributions to meteorological education by his many books and educational programmes;

4. and his important contributions in making the findings of scientific research accessible to the educated public and to build bridges to the general culture.

In addition, Professor Aksel C. Wiin-Nielsen served as President of the European Geophysical Society from 1990 - 1992, i.e., at a time when the Society was still in a very unstable situation. 1990 he invited the EGS to Copenhagen, and he made the General Assembly a great success with far more then 1 000 participants.

The Society is very honored to add Professor Aksel C. Wiin-Nielsen to the list of its Honorary Members.
