The first recipient for 1997 of
this distinguished medal is Charles F. Kennel. Professor Kennel received
his A.B. in Astronomy at the Harvard College in 1959. and his Ph.D. in Astrophysical Sciences
at Princeton University in 1964. He is a Professor at the Department of
Physics and he served as Acting Director at the Institute of Geophysics
and Planetary Physics and at the Institute for Plasma and Fusion Research
at the University of California at Los Angeles. Recently he was appointed
Director of the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, La Jolla, California at
Los Angeles. Recently he was appointed Director of the Scripps Institute

Besides his many activities in scientific organizations,
unions, advisory panels, research councils, etc., he is best known by his
very stimulating and unique research articles, books and lectures, encompassing
the full range from pure plasma theory to applied and space plasma
physics. It is his authoritive leadership in all these disciplines that
has made him the first candidate to receive the Hannes Alfvén Medal of
the EGS.
