HESS article most cited source on Wikipedia

A paper published in Hydrology and Earth System Sciences back in 2007 on global climate zones has been named the most cited source on Wikipedia, referenced more than 2.8 million times! The Guardian and WIRED reported this amazing story that neither we (HESS/Copernicus Publications) nor the Australian authors were aware of. Although our article level metrics also showed high usage, we were not aware that the article had such a tremendous impact. The fact that the most cited academic paper on Wikipedia is an open-access article corroborates once again the value of open science and reflects the philosophy of the EGU and Copernicus: "open science – let it grow".
