The conference

The conference brought together three important scientific meetings for the water science community at the international level: the Alexander von Humboldt Conference of the European Geosciences Union, the STAHY workshop of the International Commission on Statistical Hydrology of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (ICSH-IAHS) and the Leonardo Conference of the Hydrological Sciences Division of the European Geosciences Union.

The Alexander von Humboldt Conference Series (AvH) of the European Geosciences Union are a series of meetings held outside Europe, in particular in South America, Africa or Asia, on selected topics of geosciences with a socio-economic impact for regions on these continents, jointly organized with the scientists and their institutes and the institutions of the same regions. For the year 2015, the Alexander von Humboldt conference will be joined with the EGU Leonardo Conference Series, a series of annual meeting focusing on emerging issues in hydrology and water resources. The joint organisation of the two conferences is a unique opportunity for stimulating a truly interdisciplinary and international forum on water challenges and societal implications in the XXIst century.

The STAHY Workshop of the ICSH-IAHS is an annual workshop focusing on statistical methods useful for hydrological analysis. The STAHY’15 edition will be jointly organized to the AvH conference in order to explore, discuss, and share appropriate statistical tools as a support to the main topic of the conference.

In partnership with the Geological Society of Africa and supported by Prof. Aberra Mogessie (President of the Geological Society of Africa); Dr. Asfawossen Asrat (VP of the Geological Society of Africa for the Eastern African Region and in charge of the Geological Society of Africa permanent secretariat at the Institute of Earth Sciences, Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia).

The joint organization of the three conferences for the year 2015, in the context of the city of Addis Ababa, provided a unique and unprecedented opportunity for networking and comparing different views in a country that has a long history of dealing with water scarcity.
