The annual EGU General Assembly brings together geoscientists from all over the world, providing a unique forum to present their work, network, and discuss their latest research. EGU members receive a substantial discount when registering for the annual conference.

An EGU membership also allows first authors to submit an abstract to present at an EGU General Assembly.

Applications for financial support to organise scientific meetings, conferences, and training schools

The EGU Topical Events programme is dedicated to the pursuit of progress in all areas of the Earth, planetary, and space sciences through the organisation and running of conference series, topical meetings, and training schools for the benefit of all scientists, with special attention to the needs of Early Career Scientists. EGU members can apply for meeting sponsorship, including EGU’s signature Galileo conferences, which are informal meetings designed to address well-focused, cutting-edge topics at the frontiers of geoscience research.

Registration at membership rates at the AGU, AOGS, and JpGU annual meetings

The EGU has signed Memoranda of Understanding with the American Geophysical Union (AGU), the Asia Oceania Geosciences Society (AOGS), and the Japan Geoscience Union (JpGU). As part of these agreements, these societies offer EGU members discounted registration rates at their annual meetings (and vice-versa).

Travel support to present research at an EGU General Assembly

Current EGU members are eligible to apply for Roland Schlich Travel Support to attend in-person annual meetings, which typically bring together more than 16,000 Earth, planetary, and space scientists from around the world.

Nomination of candidates for EGU awards and medals

Each year, the EGU awards & medals programme recognises eminent scientists for their outstanding research contributions in the Earth, planetary, and space sciences. For most awards, only EGU members are eligible to nominate individuals who are deserving of EGU recognition.

Eligibility to apply for EGU Public Engagement Grants

Only EGU member are eligible to apply for EGU Public Engagement Grants, which fund outreach projects designed to raise awareness of the geosciences outside the scientific community.

Eligibility to stand for a position in the EGU Council and to vote in EGU elections

The EGU is a bottom-up organisation with 22 scientific divisions, numerous committees and working groups, and a Council. Members play a leading role in shaping the Union’s future by participating in division meetings, voting in EGU elections, or standing for a position in Council.

Participation in the Plenary Session during the General Assembly

The EGU Plenary, which typically takes place during the annual EGU General Assembly, is one of the main avenues for bringing forward new ideas at the EGU. In addition, the plenary is where Union leaders present organisational information, including administrative, financial, and elections reports, to EGU members. New Council members are also inaugurated during this session.

A monthly email newsletter

The Loupe, a short monthly digital publication, is especially designed to keep EGU members up to date and “in the loop” regarding EGU events and activities, including the EGU General Assembly, as well as the latest gesocience news. EGU members have the option to subscribe to receive the newsletter via email when applying or renewing their EGU memberships.
